Volleyball was first introduced to the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964. The first men's gold medal was won by the USSR while the first women's gold was won by Japan.
Baseball:
Baseball's National League was born in 1876. The eight original cities with teams were: Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Louisville and Hartford.
Golf:
The first golf tournament was held on October 17, 1860 at the Prestwick Golf Club in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Scotland.
Hockey:
The longest NHL game was played between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons on March 24, 1936. The teams played 116 minutes and 30 seconds of overtime before Detroit’s Mud Bruneteau scored to win the game 1-0.
Football:
To date, the Super Bowl has never been played on a participating team's home field. Nor has a Super Bowl game required overtime or ended in a shutout.
Tennis:
The first Wimbledon Tennis Competition took place in 1877 for amateurs and men only. Of the 22 competing players, the championship was won by Spencer Gore.
Cricket:
First set of game rules came in 1774 with 22 yard pitches, 4 ball overs, stumping, no-balls and stopping wicket-keepers from blocking movements of the batsmen.
Rugby
Rugby's longest game in history took place on October 7th 2011 and lasted for 24 hours and 30 minutes and 6 seconds.
